Argentario is a rocky promontory to the south of Tuscany in Mar Tirreno in the province of Grosseto connected to the mainland through Giannella and Feniglia and the dam of Orbetello. The promontory, entirely with monutain (m.635) and characterised with high and rocky coasts, where you can admire the famous 'palma nana' which grews up spontaneously, is covered by a mediterrenean bush, which is alternated by olive, grapes and fruit trees cultivations. The main turistic localities are Porto Ercole and Porto S. Stefano from which you can get the numerous beaches.
For its geographical location, it is in fact at the centre of Mar Tirreno, Argentario was considered by the first sailors a safe docking. With a big and strategic value, the promontory was built with control towers to face the costant incursions from the sea, among them we can mark that of pirate Khair ad Din, named Barbarossa, who in 1.544 sacked Porto Ercole. The economy of Argentario, once based only on fishing, has nowadays its main resource in tourism, numerous are in fact the turistic structures, such as hotels snd campsite.
At Porto Santo Stefano you can visit Acquario Mediterraneo, for a virtual dive in the blu in the wonderful depth of Argentario but also the seafront, that leads you to the big Piazzale dei Rioni, placed in an amphitheatre, where every 15th August is Palio Marinaro. From the square you can go up to Fortezza Spagnola that dominates the historical centre.
Porto Ercole has a wonderful marine, where mirror the Grotte fishermen's houses. From here you can continue the visit to the botanic garden Corsini, Porta Pisana, surmounted by clock tower and Sant'Erasmo churche.
