History

In 13^th century Florence, the Sassetti were already a powerful family, and many of its members held very important positions within the government of the Comune. It was in the 15^th century, though, that the family's fortunes took a sharp turn for the best, when Francesco di Tommaso Sassetti acted as the “General Manager” of the Banco Mediceo at the court of the Medici for 40 years. In 1560, the family moved to Pisa and Livorno in order to better manage their commercial exchanges with their Marseille subsidiary. In 1687, the family moved from the Kinzica district in Pisa to the San Francesco area of the same city to live in the Battaglia building, a palazzo they inherited from the women of the family. The building has a lovely 16^th century façade which resulted from the merging of two Mediaeval case torri, the typical tower-shaped buildings of Pisa. Thank God, the members of the Sassetti family have been living there since then.

The Relais

The Relais offers a well-balanced merging of ancient and modern atmospheres. Provided that you don't suffer from vertigo (in case, a Persian carpet will turn a handy solution to the problem), you will enjoy a breath-taking view over the cloister from the futuristic glass intermediate floor. During the summer, breakfast is served in the cloister. In case you don't mind a short walk, breakfast may also be served in the nearby Frangioni pastry shop. The Relais, a recently renovated 66 square meters apartment, is part of the ancient Sassetti building, the palazzo where the family has been living since 1690.

The relais is a two-storey apartment with independent entrance comprising a tiny sitting room with sofa bed, satellite TV and kitchenette on the ground floor. On the intermediate floor, you will find a dormeuse which can be easily turned into a bed. A narrow corridor leads to the double bedroom and to a wide and bright bathroom.
