Local Area
Aside from Florence’s major sites – the Duomo and Baptistry, Ponte Vecchio, Uffizi Gallery, Piazza della Signoria, Bargello Museum, Galleria dell’Accademia – there is lots to do and see in Florence.

Of the many museums in Florence, among some of the most popular are: History of Science Museum, which contains a collection of scientific instruments, including some of the original instruments by Galileo Galilei; the Archeological Museum houses a collection of Etruscan objects and artifacts belonging to the Medici Family. Located in the Palazzo Pitti are also the gallery of Modern Art, the Silver Museum and the Costume Gallery.

Florence has numerous churches, each with their own style and history. Basilica di Santa Croce was built in the Gothic-Florentine style and contains several masterpieces by Giotto, Cimabue and Brunelleschi. It is also the burial spot of Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. Santa Maria Novella built in the Gothic-Romanesque style is famous for its green and white marble façade and includes frescoes by Masaccio and the Crucifix by Brunelleschi and the one by Giotto.

There are also many outside markets in Florence – the market at San Lorenzo being the largest and most famous. Be prepared to buy leather products, jewelry boxes, clothing and souvenirs.
