Viareggio is the main centre of Versilia, lied on the beech for 3 km between the channel Burlamacca in the south and the pit of Camaiore in the north. Viareggio mantains the picture of a city founded for pleasure and holidays, where are recognizable the features of the beginning of the XIX century. Near the historical heart of the city, based on the arbour where are the shipbuilding activities, the modern part diveloped in XX century, changing a lot of times: at the beginning with the realisation of the wonderful promenade where are villas and pavilions from XIX century, then with the expansion beyond the pinewood of Ponente, finally filling the space with a so called garden city near the train station. In Viareggio the holiday season last all the year, escaping from chaos and from the exesses that in the other centres of Versilia marked the summer period. Viareggio has a cultural tradition which was born from the very famous names: Gabriele D'Annunzio, Pirandello, Grazia Deledda, Leoncavallo, Mascagni and Puccini and then it has mantained the culture with the istitution of the literature prize (leinida Reoaci, 1929), exibitions and artistic manifestations in general. The famous Carneval of Viareggio, with its colored parades of allegorical wagons, attracts a lot of turists, but the wise work of the artisans can be admired in every seasons. The careful tourist doesn't missa visit in the Prehistoric and Archeological Civic museum and in the picture-gallery, the first of the numerous old reports and the second for the numerous works of Lorenzo Viani and the presence of the collection Lucarelli, composed by pictures of artists of 900.
In ther gastronomy Viareggio is the protagonist of fish. The typical dishes we can taste nowadays are the traditional recipe invented by the fishermen like: acciucco, fritto al cartoccio, octopus salade. Furthermore, inland we can discover the parfumes and the tastes of the poor cooking of Versilia. The mushrooms are very appreciated and they are cooked in a lot of ways, but also salami. Even oil is really good, which is in every dishes of Versilia and in the soups rich in vegetables and local erbs which contribute to make the gastronomy of Viareggio appreciated and renowed all over the world.
