Historical informations

Lucca has origins from Liguria, it became a roman colony in the 180 B.C. and it assumed a big importance like street node, in fact the Romans constructed an amphitheater and a theatre. The reports begin to put in relief the city only from the period of the Longobard domination, in which it becomes the main city of Tuscia. After a momentary clouding in Carolingian age, Lucca returns in auge thanks to the Contessa Matilde di Canossa, who chooses it as its residence in the periods she passed in the Marchesato of Tuscany. It was very rich during the XII and XIII centuries, because it was the principle silk manufacturer of all West. At the moment of the explosion of the rivalries between Guelfi and Ghibellines, it begins for Lucca a period of alternate fortunes and passages of hand. Free and independent only in 1400, it remains so for four centuries, until the arrival of the troops of Napoleone in 1799; to the term of the Napoleone domination, the sovereignty on the Ducato passede to the Borbone-Parma.
