High on a hill dominated by Elsa Valley, few Km from Siena, in the heart of a countryside full of olive-trees and vines, San Gimignano is an extraordinary example of medioeval city. It mantains intact the urbanistic plant of the XII-XIII centuries, with churces, palaces and houses from which emerge 15 of 72 ancient towers.
San Gimignano is an important historical and artistic centre and along with its countryside, is the core of the production of famous and valued wines among which Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Chianti dei colli senesi are the best known.
Renowned also for its production of zafferano purissimo (pure saffron), San Gimignano has just discovered its cultural importance and its agricultural origins.

The main squares: The city centre of San Gimignano, rather little, has maintained all his old architectural features, offering sights of incredible beauty. Walking through the two main streets of the city, you reach the first square Piazza della Cisterna: encircled by houses and medioeval towers. In the middle of the square is a cistern. Near to "Piazza della Cisterna" is Piazza del Duomo: on the right you can find Palazzo del Podest
