Turistic informations about Petriolo

The first informations about the Spa of Petriolo dates back to 1230, when the town of Siena sent there a notary, Bonfilio, to fill a list of people "qui iverant ad balneum". The baths of Petriolo are already mentioned by Marco Tullio Cicerone in its oration Pro Marco Caelio and also Marziale speaks about them in its Epigrammi. The recent discovery of the roman tombs in the nearby of Petriolo, in fact, supports the thesis which asserts that the spa were known and used by the roman Age.

In 1404 it was built the fortification of the spa of Petriolo- the only example remained of the fortified spa, whose walls are even nowadays admired and the tower of the Repubblica Senese.

The baths of Petriolo were attended also by important members of the Medici and Gonzaga families, dukes and an eccellent and accostumated visitor, the Pore Pio II the world Enea Silvio Piccolomini.

In 1707 Petriolo was already in the official list of the mineral waters of Italy, published by the Ministery of the Interior.

Nowadays the old and by now too small plan has been replaced by a modern and comfortable spa, equipped of the most sophisticated equipments for the cures of the respiratory apparatus, the locomotor apparatus and for the skin treatments.

The sulphureus water of the spa are rich in sulfate, alkaline bicarbonate and mineral salts.
The temperature of the water reaches 43 Celsius degrees.

  • Bones' arthrosis
  • Extraarticular reumatism
  • Diseases O.R.L.
  • Sinusitides
  • Respiratory diseases
  • Faringal laryngitises
