Wine road Costa degli etruschi

Great wines, so great that this area is known by the specialised magazines and connoisseurs all over the world. A locality, only few km from Bolgheri, is called La California. Mario Incisa invents Sassicaia wine, defined by a well known magazine "the most famous italian wine", Antinoris offer their experience and the prestige of the most capable wine producers in the world. Ludovico Antinori creates one of the most suggestive wine cellar in Italy and he begins to produce Ornellaia, which in 1995 received from the magazine Decanter the name of the best italian cabernet. Piero Antinori changes the production of rosà wine, really popular during the 70's, into a wonderful Guado al Tasso, which is at the top of the production of the national enology. But the process doesn't stop here: together with Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Guado al Tasso, are a lot of young producers who reach the quality tops of big names and conquer a deserved reputation a not only in the area of Bolgheri, but also in the near DOC Montescudaio, Val di Cornia and Elba.

In this way the wine road "Strada del Vino Costa degli Etruschi"is born: great wines, young producers, but especially a territory, located in a parallel area and contigous to the sea, equipped with erything that a visitor could desire: medioeval villages where the life of the people is very quite, hills covered by forests where there are a lot of wild boars, deers, sightseeings where you can enjoy the vegetation along with the intense blue of the sea, a nice population, natural and tasty food, that invites you to taste also the wines, i che invitano ad indulgere nell'assaggio dei vini, product of these lands. The wine road will lead you through cultural, ambiental, and gastronomy itineraries with a perfect integration between spirit and matter. From Montescudaio, Guardistallo and Casale, the three villages located in the north in the old "feudo Della Gherardesca", we can go, with proper deviations, to Montecatini Val di Cecina, centre of ancient mining activities tied to the extraction of copper

The main concentration of winwe cellars is in the nearby of the village, near Castellina Marittima and Montecatini. Between Casale and Bolgheri you cross the Bibbona territory, where is a natural park (La Macchia della Magona), entirely covered by paths dipped in the green of the forest, that you can cover by foot, by bike or horse. In the central position of the territory, the road leads you to Bolgheri, where is a beutiful castle and memories of the famous italian poet Carducci (you can miss the small Nonna Lucia cemetery and the cypress boulevard). Bolgheri road, which leads you to Castagneto, is one of the most evocative road with trees of the area: on its sides you can find the vineyards of Sassicaia and the wine cellars, where are produced Ornallaia and Le Macchiaiole. Some oil mills, not far from the road, are a worthing and instructive stop for the working of the extravergine olive oil. Castagneto Carducci, agricultural centre of medioeval origins, dominates a landscape full of vineyards, forests delimitated by the intense colour of the Tirreno sea.

From that point the road goes in wooded area, full of naturalistic itineraries of Sassetta, up to Suvereto, at the centre of the DOC "Val di Cornia". Besides the visit to the old medioeval villages of Suvereto and Campiglia, are very interesting Montioni, Monte Calvi and Lagoni Rossi parks and also the archeological and mining park of campiglia, with Rocca di San Silvestro, the mines and the Etruscan foundries. The winw tourist will find here a very livrly area, full of young companies that want to emulate the great wines of Bolgheri: great cabernet and great merlot, together with more traditional wines, but cured as the modern market imposes. Piombinois an industrial city, famous for its steel mills, is the "door" to Isola d'Elba, defined already by Plinio "Insula vini ferax", abundant wine island. The sea, the weather and the ambiental attractives dominate the agriculture, which is discovering the wine as a product that marks the reputation of the territory. The wine tourist could be like an "hunter", going to the search of a rare bottle of true aleatico from the intense scents of jams and oriental spices.
