There are important products in this area: besides wine as Montecucco D.O.C. and Maremma Toscana I.G.T., it is worth to be remembered the oil (I.G.P. Toscano, especially Seggiano), the chestnuts, that will have the label I.G.P. (Chestnut of the Amiata mountain), but also the mushrooms, especially porcini and ovuli and the honey of high quality. The road is organised in a main itinerary and in five small itineraries that cover the area, passing through the most interesting places from the historical, cultural, ambiental and agricultural point of view. The main tracing link the following villages: Paganico, Sasso d'Ombrone, Poggi del Sasso, Montecucco, Cinigiano, Porrona, Montenero, Montegiovi, Montelaterone, Castel del Piano and Seggiano.
The itinerary pass trough the most important areas of D.O.C. montecucco. Starting from Paganico, lively and modern centre with an interesting town-walls with four doors of the IV century, and leaving behind Monteverdi farm, you arrive to Sasso d'Ombrone. Going up, you reach Poggi del Sasso, a little rural village which is the capital of the Montecucco wine. This is the most visited area, full of wine cellars and companies, but it is also interesting for its beautiful castles of Vicarello and Colle Massari. Only few kilometres from Poggi del Sasso is Montecucco farm, which gives the name to the DOC wine. This is the heart of a wine area in front of Amiata mountain. A lot of agritourisms, characteristic restaurants and a territory full of animals, makes this place very interesting, From Montecucco is really easy to reach Cinigiano, which is the village where is the information centre of the wine road. In Cinigiano are to be visited the wine cellars, open during the grape feast in october. Only few kilometers from Cinignano is Porrona castle, the representative point of DOD of Montecucco. Through the village of Cinigiano you go to Castel del Piano and more exactly to the village of Montenero.
Montenero is the other "capital" of DOC.
In Montecucco is possible to visit the wine and vinery museum. Near the museum are some wine cellars and some zones where you can taste wine, oil and other typical products. During the summer in Montenero park, is organised an outdoor wine cellar for tasting Montecucco wines. In Montenero you can also visit the sink of 600 and the door of the town-walls. Once you have left Montecucco and you have gone further to amiata, you reach in the area of Mongiovi: a museum full of olive trees and vineyards. It is already projected a museum for the preservation of the "genoplasma" and
in particular of the local vineyards. It is very characteristic also the town centre of Mongiovi, where the last sunday of every September is Sagra della Bruschetta. Montelaterone is the village that you find before reaching Castel del Piano: to be visited the historical town centre, good preserved.
Castel del Piano is one of the more populated centres of Amita mountain; to be visited is Nericci palace, future centre of the museum of the agricultural culture, Orologio and Castiglionese doors, Nasini boulevard and Monaci, Cantucci, Bruni, Alluigi, Cerboni palaces, Teatrino and la Loggia della Mercanzia. The itinerary ends in Seggiano or little more ahead, in another zone tparicular fro the vinery but for the olive tree; to be visited iis the inhabited center Le Loggie del Mercato and the characteristic historical center rich in wine cellars dug in the cliff. It is very important the beautiful Castello del Potentino and the singular art garden, Giardino d'arte di Daniel Spoerri. You can't miss a visit to the systems of Olivastra Seggianese, a local cultivation of Amiata that gives origin to the only tuscan oil made with only one variety of olives, called Seggiano. To remember the festivity of the oil that is the first Sunday of December.
It is an itinerary rich in history, focused on two important castles: Monte Antico eandCasanovole. It is an itineary which passes not far from Ombrone river, in an area once really important for the grape coltivation and which nowadays ids discovering its ancient popularity. To be visited are the villages Pari and Casal di Pari, rural jewels; the thermal centre of Petriolo is very evocative, dipped inthe natural park Basso Merse. A lot of agritourisms and some typical restaurants make your stay really interesting.
From Paganico, where it is celebrated Sagra della Ranocchia the first sunday of September, you reach Civitella Marittima. The centre of Civitella Marittima, really hospitable and nice, dominates this itinerary that bring you to the area of D.O.C. Monteregio of Massa Marittima. You can't miss a visit to the wonderful abbey Ardenghesca, ancient monastery located in the so-called "via del sale", (salt road).
Campagnatico is the starting point of this itinerary: a very important centre for Maremma, and a village remembered by Dante. To be visited is the civic theatre, Rocca Aldobrandesca and the palace prethorium. The panoramic and evocative itinerary among olive trees and vineyards, has on the background the plain of Maremma.in Campagnatico is a characteristic mule race (Palio dei Ciuchi), in september.
This itinerary really evocative, which has its centre in Castiglioncello Bandini, dominated by a wonderful castle. To be visited are the wine cellars of the castle, nowadays under restauration. The wine road is near to the natural park of Poggio dell'olmo and more ahead it is near to the natural park of monte Labbro. Going further you reach Strabugliano village, in the territory of Arcidosso. Cana, a little rural village of etruscan origins in the territory of Roccalbegna, is one of the most iumportant area of the D.O.C. Montecucco wine production. In Cana is the Sagra della biondina, on the third sunday of every october, a festivity dedicated to the chestnut. To be visited is the water collector of Medici of XVII century.
Itinerary all included in the territory of Cinigiano. It is the old road of the mountain that links the plain with Amiata mountain, the corn with the chestnut trees. The vine is therefore in all the area. Sasso d'Ombrone, once called Sasso di Maremma, is a little village in which is a particular festivity, the tthird sunday of september: the festivity of "capitone". Ponticello Amiata is instead a village full of history with a delicious museum (casa museo), has an important culture of the chestnuts and there is a festivity for the chestnut the second sunday of october.
