Wine road Terre di Arezzo

The itinerary covers appoximately 200 km, passing trough different wine zones: Chianti D.O.C.G., Chianti Colli aretini D.O.C.G., Colli Etruria Centrale D.O.C., Valdichiana D.O.C. and Cortona D.O.C. Vinsanto of Chianti D.O.C. and of Chianti Colli Aretini D.O.C. You see the typical tuscan landscape with vineyards, olive trees, tobacco cultivation, chestnuts trees, woods, but also artistic and archeological beauties that you meet along your iteneray You start from S.Giovanni Valdarno, whre was born Masaccio and you continues to Montevarchi, from where starts the itinerary for the natural park of Cavriglia. An incredible variety of atmospheres, characterizes this part of Valdarno. The mining activity is has left in eredity a moon landscape of holes and excavations, and you can imagine pliocenic lake with the tropical forest that still today gives back fossil rests of tigers, hyenas and mammoths.

In the nearby are filari, villages and castles. Close to Cavriglia, is the Roseto Fineschi - beyond 8.500 varieties of roses - and the park of Cavriglia, in the heart of the Chiantigiani mounts. You go backto the main road towards Mercatale Valdarno and then you continue between vineyards and monuments like the Tower of Galatrona, the Pieve di Petrolo until Bucine. To the crossroad of Capannole, starts another itenerary among castles and olive trees that goes to Pergine and Montozzi, where from the centennial olive trees that encircle the country it is extracted the optimal extra oil vergine of olive, and in Civitella, you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic viewof all Valdarno from one side and Valdichiana aretina from the other. Starting again from the crossroad of Capannole you go to the heart of the Valdambra, with the castle of Cennina, the ancient Abbey of Wheels and the villages on the hills. From Ambra an other route, "the way of Montebenichi", foes trough the evocative hill landscape with numerous examples of rural building perfectly integrated in the territory and now used as agritourismus.

Among vineyards and olive trees, are Pieve di S. Maria in Altaserra, the village with Palace Stendardi or of Capitan Goro from Montebenichi who was the comandant of Giovanni from the Black Bands (XVI sec.), and the restored public square with the castelletto in Aragonese style of first '900. Continuing in the main road from Ambra to Colonna del Grillo, the road opens with its vineyards in Monte S. Savino direction. Going near the historical Castle of Gargonza. From Monte an Savino you go further to Valdichiana up to Lucignano, with the characteristic spiral plant, and then to Foiano; after a pause to the Tempio of the Ammannati a pozzo della chiana, you go up to Cortona with its archaeological etruscan and roman diggings, the Museum of the Etruscan Academy and a wonderful panoramic view of all Valdichiana.

And now you are in the heart of the Valdichiana with another route among the extensions of vineyards, olive trees and with the imposing leopoldine houses, that tell the history of this valley cleared by Granduca Leopoldo. Continuing on the national road them Umbro Casentinese you meet Castiglion Fiorentino, with the beautiful public square, testimony of the genius of the Sangallo, and then you reach Arezzo. This is a medioeval city encircled by hills of vineyards and olive trees, it rises to the center of four valleys rich in history and culture, beyond agricultural and food-products of highest quality. To be remembered is the famous Fiera dell'Antiquariato which is in the streets of the historical center every month. There are two museums, the Etruscan one which is accommodated in a convent on the roman amphitheater, and the richest medieval pinacoteca; numerous artistic monuments, among them the works of Piero of the Francesca, Giogrio Vasari and Andrea della Robbia, just to quote onle few From Arezzo the road, Provinciale dei Sette Ponti arrives to the feet of the Pratomagno.

The beautiful vineyards on terrazzamenti are an example of perfect harmony between the man and the nature. In the itinerary is the rural village fortified of the Borro in order to reach then Loro Ciuffenna, in whose vicinities is the Romanesque Pieve of Gropina Then you go back to Saint Giovanni Valdarno, passing from Castelfranco. Further indications are available near the information point situated in the beautiful piazza Grande of Arezzo and other information points dislocated in the territory. Covering this route the riches offered from the territory are not exaustedded, but the possibility to know wines gastronomy, people, ospitality, traditions, nature, art of the LANDS OF AREZZO
